Candidates contesting municipal by- elections on 31 August 2022

Five municipal ward by-elections will take place in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape, Wednesday, 31 August 2022.

The by-elections will be contested by three independent candidates and nineteen candidates from eight political parties.

KwaZulu-Natal:

Ward 12 in the Mthonjaneni Municipality – KZN285 will be contested by Vusumuzi Sakhiseni Mthabela of the African National Congress (ANC), Mxolisi Ntuli of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Wellington Bonginkosi Nsele of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), and Wilton Khulekani Vilakazi of the National Freedom Party.

The ward was previously represented by the IFP and became vacant as a result of the death of a councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 50,14% and the IFP candidate won the ward with 58,05% of valid votes.

Mpumalanga:

Ward 03 in the Nkomazi Municipality – MP324 will be contested by an Independent candidate, Jacob Mancoba Mtetwa, Wanda Ngomane of the ANC and Zanele Ngomane of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the termination of the councillor’s membership from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 municipal elections was 36,35% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 73,52% of valid votes.

Ward 10 in the Nkomazi Municipality – MP324 will be contested by an Independent candidate, Vincent Tsepo Nyambi, James Bongani Sono of the Able Leadership (AL), Irvin Kevin Sibiya of the ANC and Sunnyboy Charles Mkabela of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the termination of the councillor’s membership from the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 municipal elections was 42,07% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 72,63% of valid votes.

Ward 13 in the Bushbuckridge Municipality – MP325 will be contested by Gram Lefokisi Donald Sambo of the ANC, Gilbert Steven Malele of the African Unified Movement (AUM) and Rudolf Mjaket Mathonsi of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of a councillor. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 municipal elections was 45,61% and the ANC candidate won the ward with 39,19% of valid votes.

Northern Cape:

Ward 21 in the Sol Plaatje Municipality – NC091 will be contested by an Independent candidates, Lucas Ruiters, Ranolang Edwin Tokgwi of the ANC, Jamie-Lee Andrea Simoné Greeff of the Democratic Alliance (DA), Selebogo Devilliers of the EFF, and Johan Dawid Griesel of the Vryheidsfront Plus (VP).

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the termination of the councillor’s membership to the party. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 municipal elections was 48,52% and the DA candidate won the ward with 51,14% of valid votes.
