Statement by Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis
The holy month of Ramadaan is a time during which we seek to grow our spiritual selves through fasting, reflection, and prayer. I hope the month has been filled with this for you and your loved ones.
Islam in Cape Town has the special tradition of sharing a meal with one’s neighbours to ensure that they too have something with which to break their fast. This is something that speaks to me as a religious person myself. While I may not practice Islam, this idea of sharing with your neighbour resonates with me deeply – and I believe it resonates with every person who considers themselves religious.
This is why it was a great privilege for me to have shared an Iftar with you as your neighbour and friend, partaking in which was so graciously provided.
Cape Town is blessed with multi-cultural diversity, centred on a spirit of openness, sharing and tolerance.
I am proud to lead a City where we appreciate each other’s differences and work towards the common goal of a more prosperous, more safe, and more caring Cape Town.
Eid Mubarak!
