Two suspects, a woman and a man, aged 21 and 28, are expected to make their first court appearance in Prins Albert today after they were caught in possession of dagga to the estimated value of approximately R880 000.00 on 26 September 2021 during a joint, integrated crime prevention roadblock between SAPS Laingsburg, Saps Leeu-Gamka and Provincial Traffic Department at Rietfontein on the N-1 near Leeu Gamka.
Members were performing routine vehicle checks at the roadblock when they pulled over the suspicious Hyundai minibus with the two occupants inside. Upon searching the vehicle, members attached to the Provincial Traffic Department found 35 bags of dagga that were concealed in bags stacked inside the vehicle. This find subsequently led to the immediate arrests of the two suspects who were en-route to Cape Town. The consignment is believed to be destined for distribution in the Metropole.
Investigation has been taken over by the Provincial Detectives Narcotic Section. The duo face charges related to dealing in dagga.
The strategic deployment of members in collaboration with our counterparts along our main entry and exit routes is part of an ongoing strategy to curb the influx of illicit drugs and goods into the Western Cape Province and to bring perpetrators to book.
The police remain committed to continue to embark on similar operations, raids, roadblocks and vehicle checkpoints in an effort to safeguard communities in the province.
Provincial Police Management has commended those involved in this bust for their vigilance and commitment to rid our province and communities from the scourge of drug dependency and the grip it has on our communities. The proliferation and eradication of illicit goods such as Drugs remain high priority in this province.
