Duo convicted for casino fraud

EASTERN CAPE - The Hawks’ Provincial Head, Major General Obed Ngwenya welcomed the conviction of Sinethemba Mdoda (27) and Yamkela Ndlala (28) by the Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on 25 August 2022 for charges of fraud.

During the year 2021 to February 2022, Mdoda who was employed at Mayfair Casino in Mthatha as a guest relations officer colluded with his friend, Ndlala to commit fraud at Mayfair Casino. Mdoda unlawfully and intentionally loaded redeemable points for Ndlala to the amount of R500 000-00. Furthermore, Mdoda loaded 5000 points to all Mayfair Casino clients.

The members of Mthatha based Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation were summoned to attend the crime scene and conducted the investigations which led to the arrest of Mdoda and Ndlala on 14 February 2022. They were released on R5 000-00 bail each. The investigation revealed that the casino suffered an actual prejudice of R500 000-00 and was saved from a potential loss of R10 million.

After numerous postponements, the duo was ultimately convicted on 25 August 2022 and they are remanded in custody pending sentencing to be handed out on 29 August 2022.
