Drug trafficker sentenced

WESTERN CAPE – In a concerted effort to deal with the scourge of drug trafficking that generate serious and violent crimes, members of the police ensured that Typhenne Ewyne Jantjies (32) find himself serving a five-year jail term following the confiscation of drugs with an estimated street value of R926 000-00.

Jantjies is the nephew of a well-known gangster known as 'Red' who has since been shot and killed. He was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment of which five years is suspended for a period of five years.

On 17 October 2016, the members of Tactical Response Team in Khayelitsha reacted on information about a vehicle suspected to be carrying drugs. The members spotted a vehicle, BMW which drove faster after spotting a police vehicle. A vehicle chase ensued and the team caught up with Jantjies' vehicle.

The vehicle was searched and 32 000 mandrax tablets were recovered. The suspect was subsequently arrested on a charge of dealing in drugs. This culminated in the matter being transferred to the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation team in Bellville.

Jantjies will effectively serve five (5) years direct imprisonment and was further declared unfit to possess a firearm.
