Driver of hijacked vehicle caught on the wrong side of the law

The City’s Traffic Service, Metro Police and Law Enforcement Departments arrested 168 suspects and issued 64 977 fines during weekly operations. Law Enforcement Auxiliary officers also recovered a hijacked vehicle.

The swift action of Law Enforcement Auxiliary officers led to the recovery of a hijacked vehicle on Saturday, 28 August 2021.  Officers were on duty on Main Road,  Observatory when they noticed a vehicle, which was reported to have fled from attempts to apprehend them by the South African Police Service K-9 Unit the previous evening. The City’s Law Enforcement officers pursued the driver and after a short chase, the suspect got caught in between traffic. The suspect was detained for possession of a hijacked vehicle at Woodstock SAPS.

During weekly patrols, Law Enforcement officers arrested 75 suspects and issued 4464 fines. Law Enforcement Advancement Plan officers accounted for 63 of the 75 arrests during the past week.

‘The recovery of a hijacked vehicle by our officers on Saturday after the suspect fled from the South African Police Service show the important support by our officers in crime prevention. The fact that the suspect was willing to drive around after evading the police officers shows the total disregard for the law by criminals. The City’s enforcement departments add value in supportive and preventative crime patrols throughout the metropole,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

Traffic officers impounded 103 vehicles and 150 cell phones,  arrested 66 suspects and issued 58 370 fines for various road and vehicle safety transgressions.

The Transport Enforcement Unit conducted operations throughout the City and arrested two suspects, impounded 67 vehicles and issued 2 993 fines for vehicle safety offences.

On Sunday, 30 August 2021 officers conducted an operation to prohibit an illegal street race in the Sea Point area where they arrested three suspects, two for reckless and negligent driving and one for being in possession of a stolen motor cycle.

During weekly operations, officers arrested 37 suspects for crimes, which included domestic violence and commercial crime. Eight of the suspects were arrested for illegal possession of drugs. Officers also issued 2 143 fines.

On Saturday afternoon, 28 August 2021, officers attached to the K9 and Tactical Response Units and the Gangs and Drugs Task Team were busy with a  crime prevention patrol in Atlantis when they received information about premises where illegal drug activities were taking place. On arrival, the officers who searched the area, found more than a thousand mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R50 000, 00. The drugs were confiscated and booked in as abandoned at Atlantis SAPS.

‘Our integrated approach in crime prevention where various specialised units work together led to the confiscation of a huge amount of Mandrax tablets. Criminals have no respect for the lives they are destroying in the sale and distribution of illegal drugs. I would like to commend the officers with this successful enforcement operation and ensure our residents that the City will keep on with our enforcement patrols to contribute towards safer communities,’ said Alderman Smith.
