SARAH BAARTMAN – A standoff between an intruder and a courageous domestic worker foiled a house robbery in Storms River yesterday. An intruder was arrested in the premises after an armed response of a private security company responded to a panic alarm.
On Tuesday, 9 November around 05:45, it is alleged that a domestic employee was busy with her chores at a house in Storms River Village, when a young man asked her for water, and she gave it to him. It is further said that after a young man left, an employee continued with her chores, but moments later found the same young man inside the bathroom, presumably entered through a bathroom window. It is said that an intruder attempted to grab a laptop, and a scuffle ensued between the two. During a scuffle, a domestic worker managed to press a panic button to activate an armed response of a private security alarm. An intruder was arrested outside the house by a security officer as he was attempting to flee. A domestic worker and her 90-year-old homeowner were not injured during the incident. A 19-year-old suspect was arrested and is due to appear in the Storms River magistrate’s court soon on charges of attempted house robbery.
In an unrelated incident, On Monday, 8 November 2021 at about 13:30, it is alleged that an unknown man stormed into a house in Beaufort Street, Kenton on Sea, and attacked an elderly man (82) with fists. It is further said that a suspect made off with a laptop, a cellphone and cash. Police arrested a man (33), and recovered all the stolen items within minutes after the incident. The elderly victim was treated for minor injuries. A 33-year-old suspect is due to appear in the Kenton on Sea magistrate’s court on Wednesday, 10 November 2021 on charges of house robbery.
