The Deputy Minister in the Presidency Ms Thembi Siweya, to unveil the brand-new studios at KZN FM Community Radio 93.6 MHz
The Media Development & Diversity Agency (MDDA), led by the Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Ms Thembi Siweya, will unveil the brand-new state-of-the-art broadcast studios at KZN FM 93.6 MHz, on Friday, 26 August 2022, in Harry Gwala District Municipality, Ixopo, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
The station is situated in Ixopo, a semi-rural area with a high rate of unemployment, at least 40% of the youth are unemployed. KZN FM is a dream of Mr Ndodeni Mbhele, who was born and bred in Ixopo within the Harry Gwala District Municipality. Mr Mbhele rallied the community around him to establish a community radio station to develop, groom and monitor primarily the young people, women and men interested in media.
This is the first time that KZN FM is being funded by the MDDA. The station was approved during the 2020/21 grant funding window. KZN FM was established in 2014, but only got its licence in 2019 and went on air in 2020.
The station broadcasts 24/7 days a week and the languages of broadcast are 70% isiZulu and 30% English. Programming is 60% talk and 40% music on weekdays. The station plays 80% local music and 20% international music.
The new state-of the art studios will elevate the quality of broadcasting, making it appealing to potential partners and propel KZN FM 96.3 MHz to even greater heights.
