Transport Department’s Back to School campaign addresses`

The national Department of Transport through the Shova Kalula Bicycle programme has provided low cost mobility solutions to learners since 2001. So far, over 100 000 bicycles have been distributed to the leaners in rural areas and townships. The goal of the department is to provide a fleet of one million bicycles to pupils countrywide who walk a distance of 3 kilometres to school. The programme has been rolled out annually in order to reach the one million target.

This year’s Shova Kalula project will be kick started at the Collins Chabane Local Municipality in Limpopo with an allocation of 257 bicycles to the deserving leaners at Shirelele and Hlalukweni Secondary Schools. The department has planned to allocate a total of 1400 bicycles for the Limpopo province in the 2023/24 financial year.

The Deputy Minister of Transport, Ms Sindisiwe Chikunga and Limpopo MEC for Education Ms Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya will officiate at the Shova Kalula Back to School campaign.
