Deputy Ministers visit the University of Zululand
The Health Deputy Minister Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo and Buti Manamela Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science & Innovation will tomorrow (Tuesday, 22 February), visit University of Zululand to raise awareness about Sexual Reproductive Health Services.
South African adolescent and youth are facing various health challenges and social ills which may be factored by their enthusiastic interest to life. The majority of HIV new incidence (30%) is reported amongst young people, and an alarming increase in teenage deliveries in health facilities is seen, including for 10-14 years and 15-19 years old.
Adolescent and Youth are a priority for the department and for the government at large. In response to the challenges the Department of Health, National Adolescent and Health policy 2017 recommended the establishment of youth zone as a low hanging fruit to fast track the implementation of the Adolescent and Youth Friendly services (AYFS).
Post-School Education and Training sector have numbers of the department of health’s target group between the ages of 20-24 years. Research shows that this is a group faced with health challenges.
The Deputy Ministers will use this visit to engage in open conversation with the students to discuss their challenges and recommendations on how the can government can better serve them.
