Deputy Minister Sotyu takes Green Back-to-School Campaign to Summerville Primary Farm school in Bultfontein, Free State
The Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms Makhotso Sotyu, will take the Green Back-to-school campaign to Summerville Primary Farm School in Bultfontein, Free State, on Friday, 04 February 2022.
During the visit, Ms Sotyu will not only encourage learners to stay in school but promote a culture of a healthy and conducive environment at the school through, amongst others, the promotion of effective waste management practices. The Deputy Minister will also hand over 100 eco-furniture desks, school shoes and bags, stationery, sanitary towels, colour-coded dustbins and garden tools.
As part of the recently launched 10 Million Trees programme, which seeks to mitigate the harmful effects of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, 45 indigenous trees will be planted at eight farm schools, 100 fruit trees at the community homesteads and additional 400 trees in various areas.
Following a challenging 2021 year where the COVID-19 pandemic marred and disrupted the school calendar, causing uncertainty and anxiety, the 2022 back-to-school campaign is being hosted in all provinces with the aim of ensuring school readiness.
