Deputy Minister Sotyu reports back on the waste management intervention in Matjhabeng Local Municipality

The Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms Makhotso Sotyu will report back on the waste management intervention in Matjhabeng Local Municipality on Tuesday, 8 February 2022, in Free State.

The Deputy Minister’s intervention emanates from the meeting that she had with the communities and stakeholders of Matjhabeng Local Municipality in 2020 wherein they raised concerns about waste management issues especially illegal dumping and the non-compliance of the landfill sites.

Ms Sotyu committed to come back with an intervention to arrest this situation which has also affected the health of the people and contravenes their Constitutional right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being and to have the environment protected, for the benefit of present and future generations.

It is for this reason that the Deputy Minister will host a stakeholder engagement session to report back on the progress of the waste management intervention projects namely Odendaalsrus Landfill site, Buy Back Centre, Street Cleaning and Waste Compactor Truck.
