Deputy Minister Sotyu to launch the waste management intervention cleaning & greening project and handover 5 trucks for waste management in Vryburg, North West
The Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms Makhotso Sotyu, together with the Executive Mayor of Dr Ruth S. Mompati District Municipality (DRSDM), Cllr Motseokae Maje, will launch the Waste Management Intervention Cleaning & Green Project and handover five (5) trucks for waste collection and landfill management in Vryburg, North West on 17 March 2023.
This launch will be done within the context of District Development Model in a year (2023) that has been declared “A Year of Implementation” towards acceleration of services to the people.
Many local municipalities are facing serious challenges with waste collection services and as a result, some of the residents and businesses dump waste in open spaces resulting in illegal dumps; due to constrained budget.
To assist the municipalities, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment engaged with the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and National Treasury to enable municipalities to procure waste collection and landfill operation vehicles through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG). DFFE has secured five (5) waste collection vehicles for the local municipalities of Dr Ruth S. Mompati District Municipality; which the Deputy Minister as the National District Champion will hand over to the local mayors.
Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Mr Njabulo Nzuza, North West MEC of Social Development, Ms Boitumelo Moiloa and MEC of COGTA, Mr Nono Maloyi will join Deputy Minister Sotyu during the launch and the handover.
