Deputy Minister to deliver address at Ilitha Labantu roundtable discussion: the sixty-sixth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 66)

Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Maggie Sotyu will be delivering a keynote address at the Ilitha Labantu Roundtable Discussion, in preparation for the 66th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW66), on Thursday 17 February 2022, in Bellville, Cape Town.

The Roundtable discussion of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), which is convened by the United Nations, is being organised under the Priority theme: “Achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction (DRR) policies and programmes in partnership with the African Women Independent Forum (AWIF) and Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

Deputy Minister will provide inputs on how gender considerations are intrinsically linked with climate change and disasters; the drivers of the vulnerability of those most affected by climate change and disasters; lessons learned from adaptation and mitigation programs from a woman perspective; and ethics of care for a resilient future.

The CSW remains instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women. The Commission takes a leading role in monitoring and reviewing progress and challenges in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, among others.
