De Aar rapist sentenced to life imprisonment

NORTHERN CAPE - The Acting Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection, Brigadier Nicky Mills welcomes the life sentence that was handed down to Monde Nyeshe for the rape of two females in De Aar Regional Court, recently.

On 06 December 2015, the accused lured the 19-year-old female victim into his house in Malaykamp, De Aar, where he assaulted and raped her several times. The victim laid a charge and the accused was arrested a few days later.

Bail was successfully opposed but the case was struck off the court roll because of outstanding DNA results.

On 17 July 2016 Nyeshe struck again and raped a 29-year-old female at her boyfriend's house in Nonzwakazi, De Aar. He threatened both the victim and boyfriend with a knife and raped her in the presence of the boyfriend. He was arrested a week later by the De Aar SAPS.

On 04 November 2016, both cases were combined and the accused remained in custody up until his sentencing.

On 28 July 2022, Monde Nyeshe was found guilty on 3 counts of rape and 01 August 2022 he received a life sentence for the 3 offences.

The Provincial Commissioner for Northern Cape, Lt Gen Koliswa Otola commended the first investigation officer, WO Edwin Mokgalagadi and Capt Wietz Coetzee from the De Aar Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for the meticulous investigation.

The life sentence can also be seen as a deterrent for other criminals that the police will not leave any stone unturned while investigating crimes against women and children, especially as we celebrating women's month.
