Dagga and dangerous weapons recovered during an awareness campaign

CENTANE – One of the root causes of gender-based violence is inequitable gender norms, hence the South African Police Service (SAPS) is focussing on utilising its male colleagues within structures like Men for Change to advocate against the scourge of GBV through proactive measures in fighting this pandemic.

Addressing the parade this morning, the Buffalo City District Detective Commander, Brigadier Mxolisi Mqotyana reiterated on ensuring good successes during these operations. “I urge you to focus on serious crimes in this area including gender-based violence affecting the vulnerable in our community. I am confident that our operations are going to be fruitful with many good successes,” said Brigadier Mqotyana.

Members led by Men for Change started their operations by easing their focus on awareness through education starting with a visit at Gobe Commercial High School to educate the youth.

During their engagement with the learners, police warned the youth to be vigilant in schools as learners can be easily enticed into choosing the wrong path by their peers. Learners were encouraged to report incidents of violence and more especially gender-based related crimes taking place in schools and in their communities.

As members were busy with the crime awareness campaign, information was received of an illegal activity taking place nearby. On arrival at the place, operational members recovered dagga and confiscated dangerous weapons. The suspect fled the scene and is still at large. Investigation continues and police are on the hunt for the suspect.

The awareness campaigns will be succeeded by Combat Operations planned for tonight. Operations will include suspect tracing and cold case intervention.
