Johannesburg:The National Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Unit has conducted a successful operation in the Johannesburg CBD, seizing counterfeit goods valued at over R160 million. This operation took place over the past week and involved a multi-disciplinary team.
According to South African Government News Agency, the operation was supported by the Public Order Policing Unit in Pretoria, the South African Revenue Services Customs Division, and brand protectors. On Tuesday, the team executed search-and-seizure warrants at several shops within a retail building, leading to the confiscation of over 62,000 counterfeit items. These items included high-end branded clothing, footwear, cosmetics, watches, jewellery, and sunglasses.
This effort is part of a nationwide initiative to combat the illegal trade, manufacturing, and distribution of counterfeit and illicit goods. Authorities emphasize that counterfeit goods violate the intellectual property rights of legitimate brand owners and pose significant health and safety risks to consumers. Moreover, these products are often produced and sold outside regulated systems, neglecting quality standards and lawful trade practices. The illegal trade impacts legitimate manufacturers and retailers, resulting in reduced market share, decreased production, and job losses.
