At the start of the month, I launched a competition for residents and organisations to hold their own clean ups in communities. I’ve been encouraged by the response thus far, which proves that we can all do more to create pride in our communities. Host a clean up in your community, take some pics and tag me on social media @geordinhl.
The month-long Clean Up Competition concludes on Thursday, 31 March 2022. The organiser of the best clean up activity will win a free lunch with me.
Don’t miss out!
A collaborative effort will move us closer to the vision of civic pride, by getting residents involved.
Littering and illegal dumping is a huge challenge. More than 180 000 tonnes of waste is cleared annually from illegal dumping hotspots city-wide. Illegal dumping cost the City more than R300 million over the last year – money which could have been used to improve the lives of residents in more tangible ways.
This Clean Up Campaign has been for you. We all deserve clean spaces in our communities, as this encourages openness and opportunity. I hope that the ongoing awareness campaign will emphasise the importance and benefit of clean communities.
The ultimate goal is to create a sustained behaviour change so that when you see someone littering, you can remind them that creating a healthy environment depends on all of us and not just the City’s Solid Waste staff.
So Let’s Keep Cape Town Clean Together!
Please report illegal dumping to 0860 103 089.
