Civil works progressing well at City’s R132 million Macassar mega housing project

The construction of civil engineering services is under way at the City of Cape Town’s mega Macassar housing project which will eventually accommodate 2 469 beneficiaries.

‘I am heartened at the progress that has been made on site. We thank the community and beneficiaries for the support as our projects can’t progress well without their cooperation.

‘Easily spotted from the N2, it is close to major transport routes and community facilities. This is another example of the City’s delivery in action of opportunities on well-located suitable pieces of land. The current civil engineering contract is being completed in three phases. Phase 1 comprised the civil works for 605 erven. It was completed in April 2021 and construction of the houses for Phase 1 is earmarked to start in March 2023. The civil works for Phase 2 is to be completed in October 2022 and the civil works for Phase 3 is to be completed in June 2023 if all goes according to plan.

‘There has been some delay with the start of the construction of homes for the first phase of the project due to unforeseen delays however construction is now earmarked to start in March 2023. The City thanks the community for its patience,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi, who visited the site today, 9 March 2022, to check on the progress.

Beneficiaries of this project will be selected in accordance with the City’s Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.

‘The City is continuing with related processes for the three phases. It is sometimes a challenge to trace beneficiaries as their details on the database are often outdated. All potential/aspiring beneficiaries and those who might qualify for State-subsidised housing are encouraged to place their name on the City’s Housing Needs Register and importantly to update their information, if required,’ said Councillor Booi.
