City’s Most Improved Reserve award: VanSchoorsdrift conservation area

The City of Cape Town’s Biodiversity Management branch recently hosted its annual recognition awards ceremony.

Staff members from the various City managed reserves were recognised for the great efforts of these teams in managing these important natural assets of Cape Town.

The VanSchoorsdrift Conservation Area overseen, by Abraham Saaiman the Reserve Supervisor and his team, was awarded the most improved reserve this year.

Saaiman was appointed as Reserve Supervisor in December 2020 and together with his team has already delivered exceptional work with regards to the ecological restoration of this area.

These restoration efforts resulted in the remarkable recovery of the Marasmodes fasciculata (critically endangered).  Through active interventions by reserve staff led by Abraham, the team collected  seeds of the species, sowed  them and as a result, 200 of these plants started growing this year. These are the first fruits of the team’s intention to grow plant species numbers at VanSchoorsdrift. Other species of significance found in this region include Leucadendron thymifolium (critically endangered) and Serruria trilopha.
