The City of Cape Town is urging residents and interested and affected parties to comment on the draft Local Spatial Development Framework (LSDF) for Mamre. Comments can be submitted from today, 31 August until 31 October 2021. The intention of this framework is to help provide direction for short-medium and long term spatial and investment planning in Mamre. The LSDF has taken into account the unique qualities of Mamre and provides a vision for the town by highlighting opportunity areas and development guidelines that will guide its future growth.
‘Mamre is a very special and unique town rich in history, culture and natural heritage. A place which residents are deeply rooted in and proud of, and where many residents take an active role in improving the town in various ways. Mamre is also the gateway town to the City Of Cape Town metro when entering from the West Coast and Boland region. It is for this reason that the City saw the need to provide a local neighbourhood plan which will guide the future growth of Mamre in the best possible way. We want Mamre to not only remain a quality place in which to live in or visit but also be a town which offers job opportunities and attracts investment.’
‘I encourage all residents, community leaders and stakeholders in Mamre to please participate in this process and to comment on the draft LSDF. The core aim of this framework is to enhance opportunities that will improve residents’ quality of living and the future planning of this special town,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment ‘, Alderman Marian Nieuwoudt.
The draft LSDF and supporting documents are available for review on the City’s website.
The draft LSDF considers the unique challenges Mamre faces as an area and how the important assets of Mamre needs to be protected and in some ways be improved in order to preserve and sustain the area for the current and future residents and visitors. Furthermore the framework will provide more detailed local area planning as well as land use and urban form guidelines to guide decision making for public and private investment.
‘I want to emphasise that this LSDF does not give or take away any rights but rather provides a future development vision and the identification of guidelines and projects that would assist towards the implementation to achieve that vision,’ said Alderman Nieuwoudt.
Some of the areas identified and considered in drafting the proposals in the draft LSDF include the following:
Natural environment
Agriculture
Heritage, culture and tourism
Built environment
Employment
Land ownership
A few of the areas of opportunity for Mamre include:
Local tourism opportunities such as hiking, biking and other local experiences.
Identification of residential infill areas
The drafting of a more detailed land use plan for the areas outside the urban development edge
Identification of areas for local business development
Once approved, the LSDF will provide various development guidelines for Mamre which will include enhancing town entrances; encouraging retention and rehabilitation of historic fabric and will promote formalised Non-Motorised Transport through the town.
‘We are truly keen on seeing all the proposals residents might have and can assure the public that their input will form part of our considerations when finalising the draft.
