The City of Cape Town hosted the Housing Development Agency (HDA), the Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA) and the National Housing Finance Corporation (NHFC) to discuss key City projects and to showcase the recently launched Regent Villas social housing project in Weltevreden Valley.

The City’s Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, and Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi, as well as senior Human Settlements Directorate officials, hosted the HDA, SHRA and NHFC yesterday, 9 February 2022, to discuss the successes and challenges of City housing projects under way in the metro.

A visit to the City and its partners’ Regent Villas social housing project in Weltevreden Valley, Mitchells Plain also formed part of the strategic discussions. The Regent Villas project was officially launched in March last year and comprises 104 social housing opportunities.

‘The City is committed to enabling more affordable housing opportunities on suitable, well-located land across the metro through our partnerships and innovation. Partnerships are vital to the delivery of housing opportunities for the most vulnerable in our city. We must continue on our mission to develop affordable housing opportunities in urban centres across the metro in an inclusive, fair and ordered manner,’ said Mayor Hill-Lewis.

‘We are pleased to have met with our partners, the HDA, SHRA and NHFC and we look forward to the ongoing discussions about housing projects and improving delivery. The Regent Villas social housing project is one example of how successful partnerships contribute to improving the lives of our beneficiaries. Phase One of the project has been completed and many units are currently occupied by beneficiaries.

We continue to drive affordable housing opportunities in and near urban centres across the metro to develop greater spatial equality in Cape Town. Social housing projects are typically developed on well-located, accessible land in and near urban centres. Our engagements will continue and we look forward to working with our various partners on key projects during this year and for many years to come,’ said Councillor Booi.
