City women burning bright

This Women’s Month, the City is shining the spotlight on the women working within the Energy Directorate. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Councillor Beverley van Reenen attended an event today to celebrate the end of Women's Month with a group of women who work in the City’s Energy Directorate.

The event, under the theme "Celebrating Women in Engineering and Electrical Work", was held today, 31 August 2022, at the Parow Civic Centre. Councillor Van Reenen delivered the keynote address.

'Today, there are many women electrical engineers, many in electrical work and many women artisans. This is the progress we have made in society. Although we are not where we want to be, where we should be, we are pushing ahead.

'The City prides itself on having a large contingent of women employees in the Energy Directorate. From the highest positions in management to those on the ground, the City has made those opportunities available. We have also invested considerable resources in upskilling and developing the technical skills of our staff in general and women in particular.

And I say we because one women's success is the success of others. The work that you do inspires those who, like you, once thought it was impossible. The work that you do provides light and hope to others,' said Councillor Van Reenen.
