City of Cape Town representatives joined golf enthusiasts for the Cape Town Open’s Pro-Am at the Royal Cape Golf Club yesterday. The City has been a sponsor of one of the country’s top golf tournaments for nearly a decade.
The Pro-Am is a precursor to the 10th edition of the Cape Town Open taking place later this week.
The Pro-Am event featured 25 teams made up of 25 professional and 74 amateur golfers.
Cape Town has hosted the tournament since its inception in 2012, as part of the Sunshine Tour.
The City will continue its partnership with the Tour until 2024 after council approved a new three-year agreement with the Southern Africa PGA Tour for the City of Cape Town to continue sponsorship of the Cape Town Open.
‘The Cape Town Open has been part of the Mother City’s sporting events landscape for a decade and the City is really proud to be part of its growth. For the City, the Cape Town Open is an important platform for our many amateur golfers to tee off in the big leagues. This platform has also reached hundreds of aspiring golfers from disadvantaged communities across Cape Town through coaching development.
‘This tournament has also provided our City with many international destination marketing opportunities, and contributed to the economy through tourism spend from the visiting delegation, which includes players, their families and their crews. It also presents us with an opportunity to show the world that we are open for business and can host events safely as we drive towards economic recovery,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith.
Today’s Pro-Am and pre-qualifying events will set the stage for the main Cape Town Open contest, which tees off this Thursday, 17 February. It runs until Sunday, 20 February 2022.
To accommodate an increase field of 240 golfers for this year, 120 golfers from South Africa and 120 international, the tournament will be hosted on two golf courses – the Royal Cape and Rondebosch Golf Club.
The tournament will welcome 2 000 fully vaccinated spectators.
