The City of Cape Town’s Coastal Management Branch will, for the next two months, undertake repairs and the refurbishment of various coastal walkways and access points along the coast between Clovelly Corner and Fisherman’s Beach in Simon’s Town.

The works include:

Repair to the Clovelly wooden access onto the beach

Concrete repairs and refurbishments of Jaggers walk, Fish Hoek

Repair and refurbishment of the Simon’s Town Long Beach car park and the retaining wall

Repair and refurbishment of the access path to Windmill Beach

Repair to Fisherman’s Beach steps and railings.

Some of the work already started in mid-March. All-in-all the refurbishments should be completed by the end of May 2022, pending unforeseen delays and inclement weather.

Jaggers Walk

The work on Jaggers Walk is currently under way.

Sections of Jaggers Walk will be closed at various stages throughout the project. Sections to be closed include:

Sunnycove station section will be closed between 22 March 2022 and 13 April 2022. There will be no thoroughfare to Sunny Cove station and pedestrians will be rerouted via an underpass to the Main Road

The section from Fish Hoek beach to the subway at 62 Main Road will be closed off from 21April 2022 to 3 May 2022

The Jagger walkway will be open on all long weekends and Easter weekend.

Windmill Beach Access

This section will be closed from 22 March 2022 until 14 April 2022

The walkway will be closed during the week, from 08:00 on Mondays until 17:00 on Fridays. A track along the beach will be de-marketed as an alternative route

Access from the carpark to Windmill Beach only via diversion route along the Beach Track

The walkway will be open over weekends.

Long Beach car park

No closures are anticipated. However, there will be areas demarcated off during works, but access to the remaining parking will not be restricted

Clovelly Beach Access

Timber walkway on Clovelly Beach will be closed during working hours, from 08:00 until 17:00 from 12 April to 14 April 2022.

All walkways will be open for long weekends and weekends.

Fisherman’s Beach Access

The Walkway will be closed during working hours 08:00 until 17:00 between 17 April and 19 April 2022

The footway will be closed while a new hand rail is under construction.

‘We know how much Capetonians enjoy these spaces and that is why we are investing approximately R2,1 million in this project to ensure that they continue to do so, for many years to come. We are committed to ensuring that our residents make optimal use of the natural assets at their disposal, for their own well-being. The works will improve the lifespan and the safety of these spaces while ensuring that they are also aesthetically pleasing. At the end of the day, our residents will reap the benefits,’ said the Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

‘Like any other construction, the works will come with a level of inconvenience, however, we are doing all we can to keep this to a minimum. Some walkways will remain open during the weekends. Thus, residents will still be able to use them. However, there will be temporary closures during the works, and signage will be in place to advise members of the public accordingly. I urge residents to please comply with the signage to avoid unnecessary disappointments. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience during the construction period. We want to make Cape Town a better place to live in, and the works will make for a safer and improved experience of the coastline,’ said Alderman Andrews.
