The City’s Road Infrastructure Management Department is set to commence with the rehabilitation of the stormwater pipeline along Yusuf Gool Boulevard in Gatesville, Athlone. The work is scheduled to commence this week and is expected to be completed by 23 March 2023, pending unforeseen delays. Read more below:
The work will take place from Monday to Friday between 07:30 and 17:00.
‘We understand that Yusuf Gool Boulevard is a busy road and that traffic moving in both directions will be affected. However, it is important that this rehabilitation work is done now ahead of the winter months. This way, the identified stormwater pipeline will be functional ahead of the winter rains to reduce the risk of the road flooding. This specific section of the pipeline was prioritised for maintenance work as a result of reported flooding in this area as well as visual and CCTV inspections conducted by the road maintenance team. We appeal to motorists to please comply with the signage,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The City will be making use of trenchless techniques to rehabilitate the existing stormwater pipeline, which include methods that entail no or little open excavations. Furthermore the cured-in-place-pipelining methodology will be implemented to allow for the liner material to be flexible during the installation process and for this material only to harden once it is at the final location along the pipeline. The City makes use of these methodologies when conducting maintenance in order to limit the impact on road users as far as possible.
The work will include the following:
Cleaning the existing stormwater pipeline including the removal of any tree roots present
Repairs on the existing stormwater pipe
Further CCTV inspection in the pipeline to confirm that cleaning, root removal and repairs (if any) have all been completed
Rehabilitate the existing stormwater pipeline
