The City of Cape Town will commence with a citywide travel survey over the next three months to gather information about residents’ commuting patterns and trips made to places of education. The data will assist the City’s Transport Directorate with transport related planning, for example to update transport network plans and travel demand across different modes of transport across Cape Town.

The City’s Transport Directorate has contracted a private company, Innovative Transport Solutions (ITS), to conduct the travel survey for Cape Town.

The survey will commence on Friday, 12 November 2021 and will conclude by February next year.

The information will be gathered by ITS-fieldworkers through face-to-face interviews, an online survey, and telephonic interviews with commuters and people who travel to a place of education. The in-person interviews will happen at various locations across Cape Town, in particular at places with large visitor numbers such as at shopping centres and along busy streets.

Those interviewed will be requested to provide information about their demographics and travel behaviour.

For example, the questions will focus on:

• where the person lives – this is to determine the point of departure for commuting or travelling to a place of education;

• where the person works or where their place of education is – this is to determine their destination;

• type of work/industry/education;

• whether the person works from home;

• how often the person makes the particular morning trip between home, work and place of education;

• the types of transport the person uses during the weekday morning trip, for example minibus-taxis, the MyCiTi bus service, train, walking, cycling, or private vehicles;

• the person’s monthly household income; and

• the number of people in the household that work

Residents are kindly requested to please participate in the survey as the data will assist the City to plan better for future transport related needs and interventions. The more we know about how and why residents travel, and the details of their destinations, the better the City can plan ahead.

Importantly, participants do not need to provide personal information such as their names and contact details.

Furthermore, the data that is collected will not be shared with any third parties outside of the City, and ITS is required to abide with the Protection of Personal Information Act.
