City subcouncil chairperson encourages residents to attend monthly meetings

The City of Cape Town’s newly appointed Subcouncil 8 Chairperson, Chantal Cerfontein, encourages residents from the various wards within the subcouncil to attend the monthly meetings and give input on the pertinent issues affecting their communities. These meetings are opportunities for the public to gain insight on the various ward projects under way or planned for their areas.

Subcouncils serve as the link between local communities in Cape Town and the City Council.

Subcouncil 8 consists of Ward 15, Ward 83, Ward 84, Ward 85, Ward 86 and Ward 100, which stretch from Macassar in the west to Somerset West and Sir Lowry’s Pass Village in the north. It is bounded by the False Bay coast on the south and east and includes the towns of Strand and Gordon’s Bay, as well as the informal settlements of Lwandle and Nomzamo.

‘As the lead political representative for Subcouncil 8, I would like to emphasise how important the community’s participation is at our monthly subcouncil meetings. We cannot do this on our own, we need the residents from these wards to please provide feedback where needed. This is also a great opportunity to be informed about the various projects and upcoming improvements from which they could benefit. Attending subcouncil meetings enables residents to be heard and for us to get feedback on important issues affecting their areas.

‘I am honoured to have been elected by the members of the subcouncil and the subcouncil manager and plan to run the administrative affairs of Subcouncil 8 with much passion and determination. During my term of office, I will be focusing on improving our interaction with residents,’ said Subcouncil 8 Chairperson, Chantal Cerfontein.

The most recent Subcouncil 8 meeting took place on 16 February 2022 at the Council Chambers in the Strand Municipal building. Residents can access the dates of all upcoming subcouncil meetings on the City of Cape Town website via the subcouncil meeting calendar or by calling the local subcouncil office on 021 850 4150.

There are a total of 24 subcouncils, which make up the City of Cape Town’s municipal structure.

The subcouncils serve the residents by engaging with them on municipal issues. Subcouncils have been given the power to act on behalf of Council via the System of Delegations and they have the authority to make decisions on a range of municipal matters.

These may include service delivery requests, building and planning applications, fault reporting and other matters, and making recommendations to Council on matters affecting their area.

One of the most important functions of subcouncil meetings is to report back and receive input on ward allocation projects. If residents have an idea for a ward project, they are welcome to contact their ward councillor or subcouncil manager as the City has made all of their necessary contact details available on the City’s website.

The membership of each subcouncil consists of the following representatives: Ward councillors; PR councillors; the subcouncil chairperson and the subcouncil manager.
