The Mother City’s premier grassroots football festival – the Kapstadt CUP – began last night at the Athlone Stadium. The tournament returns this year after being cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The City of Cape Town-sponsored Kapstadt CUP is taking place at five different venues until Sunday, 31 October 2021.

It features 10 Cape Town-based teams, a Stellenbosch-based team and two national clubs in six age groups from Under-8 to Under-16.

Approximately 850 youth football players are participating in the Kapstadt CUP.

They will collectively play in 364 games.

Approximately 1 600 players took part in the last tournament hosted in 2019.

While the tournament is reduced to around 50 percent of its normal footprint this year due to Covid-19 regulations, the Kapstadt CUP will introduce an Under-16 age group competition for the first time in its 10-year history.

‘The City of Cape Town welcomes the return of the Kapstadt CUP and is proud to be a sponsor of the Mother City’s premier grassroots football festival. The tournament delivers on our vision to create an open opportunity society through recreational activities, and it contributes to the development of skills through play.

‘For this administration, investing in developmental sporting events such as the Kapstadt CUP is crucial in ensuring we continue to provide platforms for nurturing the country’s generation of sports stars and for them to have a stage where they develop their talent at an early age,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health Councillor Zahid Badroodien.

In addition to support for event services, the City will be providing some of its facilities including Athlone Stadium, Green Point Park, Green Point Shared Fields, Hartleyvale and Malta Park in Observatory.

The safety of all those who attend events hosted in Cape Town remains a priority with strict Covid-19 protocols adhered to before, during and after matches at all competition venues.

As part of the protocols, spectators are not allowed at any of the venues.
