The City of Cape Town wants to inform the public that 80 puffer fish have washed ashore Long Beach, Simon’s Town. The City is currently collecting and bagging the fish for proper disposal. Read more below:
Over 80 puffer fish washed ashore at Long Beach in Simon’s Town earlier today, 30 March 2022.
Penguin rangers from Seaforth are busy collecting and bagging the fish for proper disposal.
Residents and visitors are reminded not to handle the puffer fish. Those walking their dogs should ensure that their pets do not come in contact with the fish either as it carries the neurotoxin tetradotoxin and should not be consumed.
The City will be monitoring the beaches from Fish Hoek to Simon’s Town in the coming days and will remove the fish, should more wash ashore. It is unclear what caused the fish washing ashore.
