City reflects on efforts that resolved water outage in Blue Downs and surrounding areas

It has been three weeks since the City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate successfully restored the water supply to Blue Downs and surrounding areas. Since then, the directorate has reflected on the behind-the scenes efforts during that time, ranging from the repairs to emergency water delivery, up until the water supply in the affected areas was restored.

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate firstly would like to reiterate its sincere gratitude to all those who worked together as a community until the water supply was restored on Wednesday, 26 January to Blue Downs, Brentwood Park, Camelot, Hagley, Forest Village, Highgate, Malibu Village, Nuwe Begin, Silversands, Summerville, Sunbird Park, Wembley and Wesbank.

The complex repair included two consecutive pipe replacements.

‘The Water and Sanitation team started collating the collective efforts that were actioned during this time. This was done after the repair team replaced two lengths of pipe, which allowed the water supply to be restored, and the backfilling and monitoring of the construction area completed.

‘They have confirmed the following: More than R1,5 million has been spent on the repair work, including operating costs for resources such as machinery and human resources. Approximately 1,2 million litres of water was provided via water trucks as emergency relief to affected communities during the repair period.

‘Thank you to the teams who worked non-stop since Monday, 24 January to ensure the water supply was restored as quickly as possible to the community. The team was still on site for three days after the supply was restored, busy backfilling the area where construction took place and monitoring the water pressure.

‘We also want to thank Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages for donating 12 000 bottles of relief water for affected residents.

‘It was not an easy time but I want to again thank everyone especially our communities for their immense calm and patience. As a City, we will continue to assess and invest in our network to ensure continued reliable supply to our residents,’ said Councillor Zahid Badroodien, the Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation.
