City prioritises fleet roadworthiness with new brake testing equipment

The City of Cape Town has installed brake testing equipment at the City’s corporate fleet workshop in Ndabeni. These brake tester stations will now be able to test the brakes of the various fleet assets and allow for repairs to be addressed in-house. The City will be rolling out this equipment to the Bellville, Hillstar and Khayelitsha workshops over the next four months.

'We have installed this brake testing equipment at the Ndabeni workshop to allow for the City's fleet management to service our vehicles in-house by our trained artisans and mechanics. This way, the brake performance of our fleet assets will be tested regularly to ensure the safety of our drivers and the public on the roads,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys.

The assets serviced at the Ndabeni workshop focuses on the central region of the city up until Atlantis. The brake tester stations will be utilised for the City's light and heavy assets, which are scheduled for a service and brake repairs. Any poor performing brakes will be assessed and repaired before the vehicle leaves the workshop.

The City has a fleet apprenticeship programme which currently recruits 10 apprentices across these four fleet workshops. Three of these apprentices are based at the Ndabeni workshop and have been trained to operate this new brake testing equipment.

The brake testers will be installed at the Bellville, Hillstar and Khayelitsha workshops by June 2023 to ensure the service is available in all areas.

The four City of Cape Town's corporate fleet workshops together maintain and repair approximately 7 000 fleet assets. The types of fleet assets serviced at the Ndabeni workshop range from all the safety and security vehicles to utility vehicles as well as some specialised vehicles, including fire trucks and other heavy duty vehicles such as the mobile fuel bowsers. The workshops also service plant and equipment which include digger loaders, bulldozers and front-end loaders, among others
