Statement by the Acting Mayor of Cape Town, Councillor Zahid Badroodien
It is with sadness that we have learnt about the passing of Rhoda Kadalie, a selfless Capetonian who stood up for the rights of others, campaigned against Apartheid, and served in former President Nelson Mandela’s South African Human Rights Commission.
Ms Kadalie, a well-known human rights champion, champion of women’s rights, academic, activist, writer, and founder of Impumelelo Social Innovations Centre, and the Gender Equity Unit at the University of the Western Cape is an example to all of how one person can improve the lives of so many.
Ms Kadalie was an active resident of Cape Town, and contributed immensely to building a strong and values-based social fabric in Cape Town. Ms Kadalie aimed to uplift all those around her. Our City will be poorer without her.
We express our sincerest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Ms Kadalie during this time of mourning.
