The City of Cape Town invites residents from Constantia, Steenberg, Tokai, Westlake and surrounding areas to information sessions about the Liveable Urban Waterways (LUW) programme, which will be piloted in various water bodies in these respective areas. The pilot programme aims to develop a systematic approach to waterway rehabilitation.
This phase of the LUW programme will focus on waterway rehabilitation projects along the Grootboschkloof, Keyser’s, Spaanschemat, Prinskasteel and Westlake rivers and the Sand and Langevlei canals, in Constantia, Steenberg, Tokai, Westlake, Westlake Village, Retreat and Coniston Park.
The City’s Water Strategy (2019) makes a commitment to transition to become a water sensitive City by 2040. This vision includes “celebrating and reconnecting people, nature and water towards achieving a water sensitive city by design,” and the LUW programme is part of this vision.
‘We are encouraging residents or any other interested and affected parties to come and find out more information about the Liveable Urban Waterways (LUW) programme, and be a part of the discussion and making a difference in our waterways.
‘This programme seeks to demonstrate how water sensitive design is a modern approach to waterway management, and how this program can achieve multiple benefits for the City’s residents in the project areas. The rehabilitation looks towards providing a more natural state of waterways, focusing on improving the quality and function of aquatic, riparian and wetlands environments.
‘Collaboration with various partners and stakeholders in these areas is integral to the success of these projects,’ said Councillor Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation.
