The City of Cape Town invites residents to an Open Day about the draft local neighbourhood plan for the Bo-Kaap. This plan, also known as a local spatial development framework (LSDF), is available for public comment until 31 October 2021.
The Bo-Kaap is the oldest residential neighbourhood in South Africa and one of Cape Town’s most iconic areas with its rich history and unique architecture. Many Bo-Kaap families have been living there for generations, and have contributed significantly to our cultural heritage.
The City recognises that this heritage should be protected and enhanced to the benefit of the local community and Capetonians in general through coordinated sustainable development.
The draft local neighbourhood plan takes into consideration the exceptional potential that the Bo-Kaap offers in terms of tourism and economic opportunities for its residents, and quality of life for those who call this their home. It focuses on what the Bo-Kaap could look like in the future, the local access and movement, the type of developments that should take place and where, while also preserving the Bo-Kaap’s unique heritage, culture and way of living.
Residents are encouraged to attend the Open Day where officials will answer questions about the draft LSDF and provide more information:
The meeting will take place from 18:00 to 20:00 on Tuesday, 12 October 2021, at the Schotsche Kloof Civic Centre in Yusuf Drive in the Bo-Kaap
All are welcome to attend and are reminded to please wear a mask and observe other health and safety protocols related to Covid-19.
‘We need as many residents as possible to comment on the draft LSDF for the Bo-Kaap. I want to encourage the Bo-Kaap community in particular, to attend the Open Day at the Schotsche Kloof Civic Centre. Interested parties can also complete the online survey that will only take about 10 minutes of their time. All of the comments that we receive during the public participation process will be used to refine the draft LSDF. Once approved, this plan will play a pivotal role in the regeneration of the Bo-Kaap and in enhancing a sense of place and community,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Marian Nieuwoudt.
The closing date for comments is 31 October 2021.
