LEAP officers arrested a suspect for attempted murder just minutes after a woman was shot and wounded in Hanover Park last night.

At approximately 23:00, officers on patrol in the area heard shots fired and investigated.

They found a woman (31) who had been shot in the lower back and arranged for her to be transported to hospital.

Officers then searched the area, and came across a group of men who started running away – one of them ditched a firearm.

He was soon apprehended, and officers also recovered a 9mm firearm with three live rounds of ammunition.

The 30-year-old suspect was arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Later, a witness positively identified him as the shooter, and an additional charge of attempted murder was opened.

In other Law Enforcement successes this past week, officers made 109 arrests and issued 4 094 fines and compliance notices.

CAPE TOWN TRAFFIC SERVICE

Officers made 40 arrests – 30 for driving under the influence of alcohol, impounded 121 vehicles and 74 cellphones, and issued 64 177 fines for various transgressions.

During the first week of Operation Exodus, 239 vehicles were checked for roadworthiness. Of these, 209 were buses, and only a handful of minibus taxis.

Examiners gave 218 vehicles the green light to proceed with their long distance journeys.

‘We are likely to see even more holidaymakers head out of town this week. Many rely on public transport to get home to their families, so I urge vehicle owners to be part of the solution, and get their vehicles checked for roadworthiness. It offers peace of mind to you, but also your passengers. That said, vehicle fitness is but one part of the equation. Much responsibility rests on the shoulders of those behind the wheel, and I can only appeal to motorists to please obey the rules of the road at all times, to take breaks often, and to steer clear of drinking and driving, or driving while tired. Your actions will impact not only yourself, but also your passengers and other road users,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

METRO POLICE DEPARTMENT

Officers confiscated 313 units of alcohol from beaches and other public spaces, and made 67 arrests – nine were for drunk driving and 28 for the possession or sale of drugs.

‘Our Law Enforcement staff confiscated an additional 120 units of alcohol. This figure will likely spike over the coming weeks as we approach our priority beach days on Boxing and New Year’s Day. It’s an unfortunate reality that some people will continue to take their booze to the beach, in spite of the overwhelming evidence that this behaviour is not just anti-social, but also dangerous,’ added Alderman Smith.

On Friday, 17 December 2021, at approximately 15:15, Metro Police officers attached to the Gang and Drug Task Team responded to a complaint about suspicious persons loitering on the Delft/Wesbank footbridge across the R300.

Upon arrival, officers noticed a suspicious male and requested permission to conduct a search. They found him in possession of an imitation firearm.

The 31-year-old suspect was arrested and detained at Delfts SAPS, where officers discovered that he had previously been convicted on charges relating to armed robbery and possession of an illegal firearm.
