The arrests were the result of the efforts by the Traffic Service, Law Enforcement and Metro Police Departments. Officers also issued 55 087 fines. Read more below:
CAPE TOWN TRAFFIC SERVICES
A random vehicle registration check resulted in the arrest of four suspects on Saturday 6 November 2021, on charges including the possession of an illegal firearm and suspected stolen goods.
Two traffic officers pulled over the Toyota Etios, when the vehicle registration check picked up a discrepancy in the colour of the vehicle – it was registered as a silver vehicle, but the one on the road was white.
The officers pulled over the vehicle, and noticed that the occupants appeared nervous, so they called for assistance and conducted a search.
A female occupant was found in possession of a firearm, so all four occupants were transported to Steenberg SAPS.
There, officers discovered that one of them has four pending cases for the possession of an illegal firearm and one for attempted murder on a police officer.
Elsewhere, Cape Town Traffic officers arrested 34 other suspects, impounded 96 vehicles, 72 cell phones and issued 50 255 fines during their weekly patrols.
LAW ENFORCEMENT DEPARTMENT
Officers made 84 arrests in the past week, including 47 for the possession of drugs, 12 for the possession of dangerous weapons, five for the possession of imitation firearms and two for the possession of illegal firearms.
Officers also issued 2 011 notices and fines, including 302 fines related to the Disaster Management regulations for not wearing masks and disregarding the curfew.
In Brackenfell, Law Enforcement officers impounded two pitbulls on Friday, 5 November 2021, following an attack on a 66-year-old man.
A docket has been opened in terms of the Animal By-Law, and will be submitted to the municipal court once the investigation is completed.
METRO POLICE DEPARTMENT
Officers made 79 arrests during patrols in the past week. Among those arrested were:
37 suspects on drug-related charges
two for driving under the influence of alcohol
11 on firearm-related charges
10 arrested for contact crimes
12 for Schedule B crimes
Four for property-related crimes
Three on domestic-violence related charges
Officers also issued 2 821 traffic and by-law related fines, and recovered four imitation firearms.
On Sunday 7 November, officers arrested a suspect in a business robbery in Lwandle after a high speed chase. He was found in possession of an imitation firearm and a stolen vehicle.
On Thursday 4 November, officers reacted to a complaint of three males threatening a member of the public in Bonteheuwel. The suspects, aged 15, 19 and 30, were found in possession of an imitation firearm, a pair of scissors and a screwdriver.
On the same day in Monte Vista, officers recovered an imitation firearm after stopping a driver for turning without indicating. Two suspects, aged 24 and 31, were arrested. At Goodwood SAPS, it emerged the driver had a warrant of arrest for charges relating to a motor vehicle theft case, and the vehicle was wanted in connection with a business robbery in the Stellenbosch area.
On Tuesday, 2 November, officers were conducting stop and search operations in New Woodlands, when they spotted a male throwing items to the ground upon spotting the patrol vehicle. The officers recovered a knife and an imitation firearm, and arrested the 19-year-old suspect.
