The City’s enforcement agencies made 212 arrests in the past week, up from 156 the week before. They also issued 61 873 fines, and the total amount of alcohol confiscated since 16 December last year amounts to 9 384 bottles.
LAW ENFORCEMENT DEPARTMENT
During weekly patrols, officers arrested 102 suspects of which Law Enforcement Advancement Plan(LEAP) officers accounted for 88 arrests. Officers also issued 4 937 fines.
On Friday, 7 January 2022 LEAP officers patrolling in the Hanover Park area heard gun shots, and, upon investigation, found an individual in the garden of a property. Officers searched the suspect and found a 9mm Norinco pistol with seven rounds of ammunition. Officers arrested the suspect and booked him in at Philippi SAPS.
The Law Enforcement Department’s enforcement interventions to act against those who drink in public open spaces, including beaches, saw officers confiscating 9 384 bottles of alcohol which amounted to 5 324 litres, between 16 December 2021 and 9 January 2022.
‘The amount of alcohol confiscated since mid-December shows that there are still too many residents who do not adhere to the rules – or do not care about endangering the lives of others. We have seen that the use of alcohol while driving often results in accidents and serious injuries to innocent passengers. On Friday last week, children were injured when a driver, with no driver license, and under the influence of alcohol, collided with another vehicle in Muizenberg.
‘No one should have to be subjected to this, but children in particular, need us to step up on their behalf. Don’t allow your children to get into a vehicle with someone who is not fit to be behind the wheel. The consequences can be fatal, but even just being hurt in a motor vehicle accident is hugely traumatic,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
METRO POLICE DEPARTMENT
Officers issued 3 724 fines and arrested 72 suspects which included 30 suspects for the illegal possession or dealing in drugs, seven for driving while under the influence of alcohol and 10 for property related crimes.
On Wednesday, 5 January 2022, officers assisted a missing boy and reunited him with his family. Officers were busy with crime prevention patrols in Lwandle when members of the public handed over a missing boy who said he was on his way to the beach.
Officers transported the boy to Lwandle SAPS where they were informed that his father had reported his son missing.
Officers set about contacting the dad, and he was reunited with his son at their home in Strand.
