A colourful collaboration between the City and Bothasig residents has seen De Grendel Park come to life with sports-themed mural art.
The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department is proud of the enthusiastic efforts by a small group of local residents who are eager to add colour and personality to local parks in Bothasig.
Starting with De Grendel Park, the ratepayers association arranged for 17 mural artists to outline the design, while local scouts and families joined in with paint brushes and rollers to complete the artwork.
‘The City supported the initiative by providing the supplies for the project, which was completed within days. It’s exciting to see the community working together by taking pride and ownership of their park.
‘Over time it’s become evident that where communities are active and neighbours take a vested interest in caring for their parks, there are fewer incidents of vandalism and less likelihood of negative antisocial behaviour,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
City partnerships with community members allow for sustainability in maintenance and development of parks, making outdoor spaces inviting, vibrant assets.
The burst of colour at Grendel Park is inspired by sport, which was carried as a theme across the 140 panel wall.
The City thanks all those who got involved and look forward to seeing the community work together at future initiatives planned at other Bothasig parks.
