The City of Cape Town’s Transport Directorate is commencing with the resurfacing of various roads in Flamingo Vlei, Table View today, 1 September 2021. The investment in the resurfacing and maintenance of these specific roads amounts to R2,5 million and forms part of the City’s Roads Infrastructure and Management department’s road maintenance plan for the area.
The residents of Flamingo Vlei and the surrounding Table View area are advised that the resurfacing of the following roads will be taking place over the next few weeks.
Avocet Street between Grey Avenue and Harrier Street;
Egret Way between Frere Avenue and Weaver Street;
Fairbridge Road between Merriman Lane and Jamieson Road;
Frere Avenue between Wynyard Street and Athens Road;
Jamieson Road between Fairbridge Road and South Road;
Schreiner Road between Hopley Road and Boy de Goede Circle;
Tern Street between Sandpiper Crescent and Whimbrel Avenue;
Vink Street between Egret Way and Grey Avenue;
Weaver Street between Egret Way and Vink Street;
Whimbrel Avenue between Malgas Road and Tern Street
The roadworks are scheduled to take place over a period of four weeks, weather permitting and pending any unforeseen delays. If all goes according to plan the works should be complete by 1 October 2021.
All-in-all, the works will cover a distance of approximately 3,5 km.
‘Our Roads Infrastructure and Management team in the Blaauwberg district is working hard at eradicating the backlog in road maintenance work caused by the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions from last year. Our teams are making good progress with all the planned road resurfacing and rehabilitation projects in the area and I am happy to report that the quality of the roads in this district is continually improving. We are addressing the maintenance of the identified priority areas in Flamingo Vlei and will communicate the plans we have to rehabilitate other roads in the area closer to the time. We ask that residents please cooperate and support our efforts by complying with the road signage and flag personnel at these sites,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The City’s Road Infrastructure and Management team will also be prioritising the resurfacing of South Road in Flamingo Vlei during this current financial year.
The work will be implemented from 07:30 until 17:00 on weekdays, pending unforeseen delays and weather permitting. All road users will be affected, and traffic flow will be impacted in both directions. As such, flag personnel will regulate traffic, one direction at a time.
The roadworks will entail the removing of the top asphalt layer on certain roads and replacing it with a brand new asphalt surface. Other road sections will be resurfaced by placing a new ultra-thin asphalt layer on top of the existing road surface.
Roads are identified and prioritised for resurfacing by the Roads Infrastructure and Management team in the district who identify roads as staff conduct site visits and according to the relevant district office’s planned schedule which addresses each area within the district to ensure that the allocated operational budget is spent equitably among all wards and suburbs.
Residents in the area should note that vehicles may be parked in the demarcated area after 18:00 provided that they are removed before 06:30. Parked vehicles that obstruct the construction works will be moved or towed away. The City asks for residents’ cooperation to ensure that their motor vehicle and that of family and friends are not parked in the demarcated area during the construction works.
No congestion is expected in the area but the City of Cape Town recommends that road users consider making use of alternate routes.
