Child Protection Case of Assaulted Child Reported in Mattru Jong

In a deeply troubling incident, a young girl was violently assaulted by her aunt before school hours in Mattru Jong, leaving her with visible bruises on her face. The assault was reported by a concerned member of a local mothers’ club, who promptly took the child to the Family Support Unit (FSU) at the Mattru Jong Police Station.

The case was swiftly brought to the attention of the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs through the One-Stop Center for Action. The child was immediately hospitalized, where medical professionals treated her injuries. Meanwhile, the perpetrator, the child’s aunt, was charged with assault and appeared before Magistrate Mohmoh Lansana at the Mattru Jong Court. She was held at the local female correctional centre for two nights before returning to court, where she pleaded guilty to the charges.

Following the court proceedings, the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs took custody of the child to ensure her safety. After thorough assessments, the ministry successfully trac
ed the girl’s biological parents and facilitated her reunification with them.

The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs continues to play a critical role in defending vulnerable children in Sierra Leone. By prosecuting offenders and ensuring that children’s welfare is safeguarded, they send a clear message that violence against children will not be tolerated.
