Census extended for Capetonians to 30 April, Mayor calls on all Capetonians to get counted

Upon concluding the initial data collection process for the national census, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) has found that the national participation rate is 83,8%, with the Western Cape coming in at 49%. If Census underreports the population of the Western Cape and by extension the City of Cape Town, national budget allocations will be misaligned to the real population figures, and insufficient to meet the needs of our residents in terms of access to basic services. It is therefore critical that we make every effort to ensure that as many Capetonians as possible are counted.

Fortunately, an extension in the Western Cape has been granted until the end of this week, 30 April 2022, with online data collection being re-opened, technical staff increased and additional management support provided.

As the City of Cape Town, we have an important role to play in the census, and each Capetonian and their household must be accurately counted. I appeal to every Capetonian to ensure that they are counted.

There is little time available to make the difference that we need to make. Please ensure that you #GETCOUNTED. To partake in the census. click here: https://getcounted.statssa.gov.za

About the Census:

The Census is a benchmark count of the entire population of South Africa. Information is collected from each member in every household, including details such as births and deaths, education, occupation, housing, access to services and assets.

Census data provides the basis of most social and population data produced by Stats SA and other organisations. It provides granular data to inform policy, planning, evaluation and fiscal allocations. It ensures that the City of Cape Town gets its fair share of budget allocations from the National Government.
