Cape Town draws curtain on successful ninth season of Sunshine Ladies Tour

The City of Cape Town is once again the sponsor of the country’s oldest and most prestigious professional women's golf tournament. The 34-year old tournament has been hosted in Cape Town for the last six years. The 2022 tournament kicked off with the Pro-Am at the Steenberg Golf Club.

A field of 132 golfers from 27 countries are taking on the 18-hole golf course for a chance to be crowned Investec SA Women’s Open champion.

The SA Women’s Open is the closing event in the Sunshine Ladies Tour calendar, which kicked off in the Mother City with the Cape Town Ladies Open in February.

It also offers the most prize money for any women's golf event in South Africa.

‘As host city and sponsor of the SA Women’s Open, we are proud to be associated with an event that elevates women in sports, while also ploughing back to the grassroots in efforts to nurture talented, amateur female golfers by providing platforms for growth.

‘The SA Women’s Open is an important event in the country’s women’s golf circuit and this administration is delighted to be part of the growth of the country’s oldest professional women’s tournament. For the City, providing platforms for women athletes is crucial in levelling the playing field with the men’s game,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith.

‘With an increased field of participants this year and the country opening up more for events, the SA Women’s Open is an opportunity for Cape Town to showcase itself as the World’s Leading Festival and Event Destination. This will go a long way in ensuring the event space retains stability and this will translate to gains for the tourism sector through spend by visitors to our city,’ said Safety and Security Portfolio Committee Chairperson Councillor Mzwakhe Nqavashe.

The winner will receive playing privileges on the Ladies European Tour.

Along with the professional golfers, a number of amateurs will be taking to the greens to earn a place among the elite competitors.

This year sees the return of the developmental coaching clinics for young golfers in partnership with the Sally Little Golf Trust.

Last year’s coaching clinic was cancelled due to Covid-19 regulations.

The young golfers will get the opportunity to experience playing at a championship golf course.

Steenberg Golf Club, the host for this year’s SA Women’s Open, is consistently voted one of the best-conditioned courses in Golf Digest's Annual Top 100 and attracts golfers seeking a premium golfing experience.

Its 14th hole features the largest green in Africa at 76 meters in length.

SA Women’s Open week runs until Saturday, 2 April 2022. Entry is free for spectators.

The tournament organisers require spectators to be fully vaccinated or produce a negative Covid-19 test result.
