The City of Cape Town is gearing up to welcome thousands of athletes to run the Absa Cape Town 12k CITYRUN this weekend. Read more below:
The City has been a sponsor of the race through its event support process since its inception in 2015.
The World Athletics Label road race is returning to the Mother City’s streets for the first time since 2019 with the 2020 edition called off due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The label – awarded by the international athletics governing body – designates leading road races in the world based on strict criteria.
For the 2021 edition, approximately 4 000 international, national and local runners are expected to take on the road race from Milnerton to the Cape Town CBD.
The Cape Town 12k CITYRUN is the third biggest race on the Western Province Athletics events calendar and normally attracts approximately 14 000 local and international participants, but the field has been reduced due to the Disaster Management Act regulations.
The event starts at Woodbridge Island at 07:00 on Sunday, 21 November 2021 and finishes at Lower Long Street in the CBD.
Along the way, runners pass some of the city’s iconic landmarks and will be treated to an exciting route with entertainment from some of Cape Town’s most celebrated performing arts groups.
The Cape Town 12k CITYRUN supports the fundraising efforts for Die Burger Kinderfonds, Cape of Good Hope SPCA, Cotlands, help2read and Reach for a Dream.
The City of Cape Town is thrilled to again have the opportunity to host this event, which connects people from different backgrounds for the love of running.
Motorists are advised to take note of the temporary road closures that will be in place over the weekend and to plan their trips accordingly.
