The City of Cape Town’s Ocean View Library was surprised by a visitor who had completed matric last year. He attributes his success to the reading programme he attended at the library.
Ocean View librarian, Fatima Kiel, was surprised with a visit by a former student of the Library Reading Programme, Leroy Davids.
Leroy started with the programme at Ocean View Library when he was in Grade 4 in 2013. The quiet and shy young boy had difficulty in his grade with the English language.
His mom and sister contacted the library to register him with their Friday reading classes.
Leroy persevered and committed to the programme until Grade 7 when he completed the programme’s four reading and writing booklets.
Combined with reading library books which Ms Kiel helped him choose and her assistance with his school work and projects, he was able to progress each year.
When Leroy visited the library last week, it was to share the news that he had passed Matric in 2021 and wanted to thank Ms Kiel for the many hours spent helping him.
Leroy dreams of joining the South African Navy.
‘I have no doubt he can do anything he sets his mind to. Seeing him through the programme when many other children would rather play, has paid off. Leroy is no doubt destined for big things,’ said Ms Kiel.
Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross, commended Ms Kiel.
‘Our librarians are dedicated to demystifying books and helping our youngest patrons reach their full potential. Libraries not only provide the information and knowledge to help students learn and grow, but also shows them a world of opportunity.’
