Attempted murder accused sentenced to twelve years imprisonment

KIMBERLEY - The Northern Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Koliswa Otola welcomed the twelve year jail term handed down to Pogisho Moagi (28) by the Mothibistad Regional Court.

Pogisho was found guilty and convicted on a count of attempted murder. During court proceedings, it emerged that the accused went to the 58-year-old woman's house demanding see her daughter who was the accused's girlfriend at that time. The incident happened on 05 November 2021 at approximately 19h00 at Manyeding village near Mothibistad.

The argument between the accused and the 58-year-old victim ensued when she refused him to see her daughter. He took out a pair scissor and stab the victim multiple times in the upper body. As a result of the attack, the victim is permanently paralysed. The accused was arrested shortly after the incident and was released on R1000-00 bail.

On Wednesday, 20 July 2022 the accused was found guilty as charged and sentenced to twelve years imprisonment on Thursday, 21 July 2022.

Major General Otola praised the investigating officer, Sergeant Thabo Phiri for excellent investigative work and for the synergy he displayed by working with the National Prosecuting Authority(NPA) and Department of Justice (DoJ). "The sentenced will serve as a deterrent to perpetrators committing gender based violence.
