DURBAN – Yesterday at 14:10, Alexandra police were conducting patrol duties when they noticed a vehicle that was operating in their policing area robbing people at gunpoint. When the police officers spotted this vehicle driving at a high speed they gave chase. When the driver of the vehicle failed to stop, police requested back-up and the vehicle was intercepted in French Road.
Two males alighted from the vehicle and started running towards a river. Members chased the suspects on foot and the suspects started shooting at the police, during the shootout one suspect was wounded. He was taken to hospital for medical attention where he remains under police guard. The two remaining suspects were apprehended on scene.
A total of four suspects aged between 23 and 30 were charged for possession of firearms and ammunition, and attempted murder. Cellphones were recovered from the vehicle. A preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects had robbed two victims at Pelham and Westgate earlier yesterday and took their cellphones. They will appear before the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on 19 September 2022.
