Anti-gang unit recover prohibited firearms within 15 minutes

Members of the Anti-Gang Unit who were deployed specifically to police gang related activities in Manenberg area, were on patrol on Monday, 30 August 2021 when they recovered two prohibited firearms in a period of 15 minutes.

 

At about 18:45 the members spotted a suspect in Thames Avenue, dropping a firearm and fled, with police members in pursuit. A 19-year-old man were apprehended and brought back to the place where he dropped the firearm. A 9mm Taurus pistol with ammunition was recovered on the scene. Moments later the team noticed an unknown male who fled into a house when he saw the patrol vehicle, and members gave chase. The 31-year-old male were arrested when a 9mm pistol was found hidden under the mattress.

 

The suspects aged 19 and 31 are expected to appear in Athlone Magistrates’ Court once charged for the possession of prohibited firearms and illegal possession of ammunition.

 

In a separate incident this morning at about 07:00 members attached to Nyanga Sector Team were on patrol in the Browns Farm area, when they came across three suspicious looking men. They searched the suspects and recovered drugs in their possession. Upon interrogating the males they were prompted to search a residence nearby to where the suspects were standing.  During the search four rounds of ammunition, cellular telephones, power banks and lap tops were confiscated. Two females who were inside the residence were questioned about the items, and both could not account for ownership. Both females aged 23 and 24 were arrested and detained.

 

Once charged the three males and two females are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ court on separate charges of possession of drugs and possession of presumed stolen property and ammunition.
