Amateta Combined School Reports Mass Hysteria Among Learners

Oshikoto Region – The Ministry of Education, Arts, and Culture is currently addressing a situation at Amateta Combined School in the Oshikoto Region’s Onankali circuit, where several learners have displayed symptoms of mass hysteria. Reports emerged of students fainting and speaking incoherently, raising concerns among educators and parents alike.

According to Namibian Press Agency (NAMPA), the director of education in the Oshikoto Region, confirmed that 18 learners have shown these unusual behaviors. Eises indicated that mass hysteria is suspected, but further investigation is underway by the Directorate of Education, Arts, and Culture’s special education team. The school’s principal, Martin Namushinga, noted that these incidents began in August and intensified during examination periods, predominantly affecting Grade 9 learners. Lusia Pwadjomuti, a parent of an affected student, expressed her shock and confusion over her daughter’s condition. This phenomenon is not new in the country, as similar cases were reported in 2014 at a school in the Omusati Region and in 2017 at Shikeva Combined School in the Ohangwena Region. Authorities emphasize that no physical harm has occurred to any learner, and efforts are being made to provide necessary assistance.
