Alleged SASSA fraudster released on warning

EASTERN CAPE – The Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes court released the accused, 50-year-old Suthukazi Buqili charged with fraud on a warning.

It is alleged that in 2002, Buqili applied for four child birth certificates from the Department of Home Affairs and succeeded then she proceeded to South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to apply for child support grants which were also successful. She started receiving payments from SASSA for four children from 2002 until 2015. The discrepancies were suspected and a case of fraud was opened at the Madeira police station. The matter was assigned to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crimes Investigation based in Mthatha for further investigation.

The accused was arrested and charged with fraud. It was also discovered that she allegedly applied for two identification documents (ID) using the same names, ID number but different surnames.

Buqili appeared in court yesterday, 3 March 2022 where she was released on a warning. She was instructed to return to court on 22 March 2022.
